Q: What are the PMCA Awards?
A: The Premier’s Multicultural Communications Awards (PMCAs) recognise excellence in multicultural media and marketing, celebrating outstanding contributions that inform and engage multicultural communities in New South Wales.
Award Categories
Q: What are the different award categories?
A: There are twelve award categories:
- Best Text Report – Excellence in print journalism.
- Best Audio Report – Excellence in radio or digital audio journalism, including podcasts.
- Publication of the Year – Outstanding contribution by a multicultural media publication.
- Best Audio-Visual Report – Excellence in broadcast and audio-visual storytelling.
- Best Use of Digital or Social Media – Outstanding digital production and multimedia storytelling.
- Young Journalist of the Year – Excellence by journalists under 30 years of age.
- Lifetime Achievement Award – Journalists with over 30 years of experience.
- Alan Knight Student Award – Best student journalism on cultural diversity.
- Public Interest Award – Outstanding public interest journalism upholding the NSW Multicultural Principles.
- Agency Campaign of the Year – Recognising public relations, advertising, and digital agencies.
- Business Campaign of the Year – Recognising internal marketing and creative teams in organisations, including the public service.
- Community Campaign of the Year – Recognising not-for-profits and volunteer-based groups.
Q. What are multicultural media only categories?
A. Seven categories are open to multicultural media only. These are: Best Text Report, Best Audio Report, Publication of the Year, Best Audio-Visual Report, Best Use of Digital or Social Media, Young Journalist of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement Award.
Submissions for multicultural media categories must either be submitted in a language other than English, or demonstrate the submission caters to a specific multicultural community.
Multicultural media is defined as any media outlet or organisation publishing in a language other than English or catering to specific multicultural communities.
Submissions to multicultural media categories will only be accepted from public broadcasters like ABC and SBS if the submission is in a language other than English.
Q: What categories are open to all media?
A: Two categories are open to all media. These are: Alan Knight Student Award and Public Interest Award.
Q: What categories are open to the marketing industry?
A: There are three marketing categories. These are: Agency Campaign of the Year, Business Campaign of the Year, and Community Campaign of the Year.
Joint entries are allowed for marketing categories. Joint entries can include collaborations between two or more agencies, an agency and a business, and two or more community organisations. All joint entries should be submitted in agreement with both parties.
Nomination Process
Q: How do I submit a nomination?
A: Nominations must be submitted on Awards Force by 5pm, Sunday 28 July 2024. To progress to the next stage, the nomination must meet all the mandatory eligibility criteria.
Q. Can I nominate my own work or does someone else need to nominate me?
A. You can nominate your own work.
Q: Can I nominate a work written in language other than English?
A: Yes. For multicultural media categories, submissions must either be submitted in a language other than English, or demonstrate the submission caters to a specific multicultural community. Please include an English translation of the work in the submission.
Eligibility Criteria
Q: What are the general eligibility criteria for all nominations?
A: All nominations must:
- Be submitted by 5pm (AEST ), Sunday 28 July 2024
- Be completed with all required fields
- Be published or broadcast between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024
- Be submitted by permanent residents or citizens of Australia, except for the Alan Knight Student Award nominees who may be a temporary resident under a student visa
- Be by individuals or organisations based in New South Wales
- Not be submitted by current Multicultural NSW employees, Advisory Board members, judging panel members, or PMCA partners
- Entrants must declare any and all use of artificial intelligence (AI) used in producing the works entered and preparing their submission. This includes but is not limited to the use of generative AI technology to create text, artwork, photography, data visualisation, and other graphics.
- For multicultural media categories, the work must have been published or broadcast in NSW or had an impact on the NSW community. For multicultural marketing categories, the campaign must have included NSW community in the target audience.
Q: What are the specific eligibility criteria for each award category?
A:
- Young Journalist of the Year: Nominee must be under 30 years of age
- Lifetime Achievement Award: Nominee must have over 30 years of experience
- Alan Knight Student Award: Nominee must be a secondary, tertiary, TAFE, or private college student
- Agency Campaign of the Year: Open to public relations, advertising, and digital agencies
- Business Campaign of the Year: Open to internal marketing teams in organisations
- Community Campaign of the Year: Open to not-for-profits and volunteer-based groups.
Q: Does the nominated work need to be related to NSW to be eligible?
A: Yes. For multicultural media categories, the work must have been published or broadcast in NSW or had an impact on the NSW community. For multicultural marketing categories, the campaign must have included the NSW community in the target audience.
Q: What happens after I submit my nomination?
A: The nomination process involves three steps:
1. Initial eligibility assessment: The submission will be reviewed to ensure it meets the eligibility criteria.
2. Merit assessment: Eligible nominations are scored by a Judging Panel based on a scoring matrix.
3. Ministerial Approval and Premier’s Endorsement: The NSW Minister for Multiculturalism and the NSW Premier approve and endorse the list of winners.
Judging criteria
Q: What are the judging criteria for multicultural media and all media categories?
A: The judging panel will be assessing nominations on work quality, impact and relevance, innovation and creativity, and cultural representation and diversity. Refer to the nomination form for other criteria specific to each category.
Q: What are the judging criteria for marketing categories?
A: The judging panel will assess nominations that clearly demonstrate background analysis and problem identification, campaign strategy and planning, execution and implementation and results and impact.
