It’s a tough and uncertain time for many in our community. I feel it when people share their worry for loved ones affected by conflicts overseas – in Gaza, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Myanmar, and elsewhere. These events are felt deeply here. There is enormous grief, made harder by distance.
And it is unacceptable that here in NSW, some in our community have been made to feel unwelcome and unsafe, because of who they are. Everyone in NSW deserves to live free from hate and intimidation. More than that, they deserve to feel they truly belong. To feel valued, because of who they are.
Amid this global upheaval, we remain committed to protecting community harmony in NSW. We’re fortunate to live in a place where people from different cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds choose to live, learn, work, and grow together – and support one another in times of need.
At Multicultural NSW, we’re privileged to work with community leaders, organisations, and colleagues across the Government to address racism and hate, and support communities affected by global events and tensions. This is daily, important work. An inclusive society doesn’t happen by accident. It takes all of us, choosing to stand together against those seeking to divide us, especially when the world feels uncertain.
There are so many dedicated community heroes working behind the scenes to bring us together. I encourage you to consider recognising their work by nominating them for a 2026 Multicultural Community Medal. See more in the full newsletter.
