The late Mohamad El Dana
Mr. Mohamad El Dana was a distinguished civil engineer, school principal, community leader, and devoted family man, committed to serving his community. Arriving in Australia in 1989, he quickly became an influential figure among migrant communities, working to foster understanding and opportunity. Mr. El Dana’s approach was characterised by genuine connection and collaboration, reflecting his commitment to uplifting those around him.
In 1998, Mr. El Dana founded Al Amanah College in Bankstown, a pioneering educational institution that integrated Islamic values with the Australian curriculum. His leadership in the establishment and development of the school set a benchmark for academic excellence and community engagement.
Under his guidance, Al Amanah College became a place of learning and a hub for cultural exchange. Students from diverse backgrounds could thrive academically while remaining connected to their cultural heritage.
Building on the success of Al Amanah College, Mr. El Dana expanded his vision by founding a second campus in Liverpool in 2002 and supporting the establishment of sister schools – Salamah College and Glenroy Private – in Melbourne in 2012. These schools have provided students with a strong sense of belonging, creating opportunities for them, and their families, to engage with both their local and wider communities.
In 2008, Mr El Dana led the Building Identity and Resisting Radicalism (BIRR) Initiative. The program focused on providing Muslim youth with resources to help them develop positive identities and resilience. He demonstrated his deep commitment to fostering social cohesion among young people. He helped them navigate the challenges and opportunities of growing up in a multicultural society.
Throughout his life, Mr. El Dana was a dedicated mentor, guiding many students who have gone on to become educators, community leaders, and advocates for social change. His work, coupled with his commitment to fostering intercultural dialogue, ensured that his legacy would live on for generations to come.
Mr. El Dana’s contributions to New South Wales have been far-reaching. His ability to bring people together, his advocacy for cultural understanding, and his unwavering commitment to social cohesion made him a true leader in his community.
