The late Emmanuel Alfieris

Emmanuel Alfieris was a passionate advocate for the Greek Australian community, known for his unwavering dedication, leadership, and generosity.

Born to Greek migrants from the island of Kythera, Mr. Alfieris’ commitment to his heritage was evident from an early age. His journey began with a deep connection to his roots and continued with his tireless efforts to unite and empower the Greek Australian community.

Mr. Alfieris’ life was marked by his involvement in community leadership. In 1990, he joined the Kytherian Association of Australia (KAA), where he quickly became an influential figure. By 2016, he had joined the Board of Directors, and two years later, he was elected President. It was a position he held with great pride and dedication for four years. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Mr. Alfieris was awarded Life Membership of the KAA in May 2024, marking 34 years of service to the organisation.

During his tenure as President, Mr. Alfieris forged lasting partnerships with institutions like the Australian National Maritime Museum. His efforts led to the creation of a dedicated panel on the National Monument to Migration, the first to honour a specific migrant group. The unveiling ceremony, attended by over 500 Kytherians, marked a significant milestone in preserving the history and contributions of the Kytherian community in Australia.

Mr. Alfieris’ leadership extended to advocating for youth, and under his guidance, the KAA saw a notable increase in engagement from younger members.

Mr. Alfieris was the first member of the Greek Australian Society (GAS) and helped establish the GAS Mentoring Program in 2021. His passion for preserving the culture and traditions of Greece saw him contributing to the documentary on the ANZACs in Lemnos, ensuring the experiences of both Greeks and Australians were remembered.

Mr. Alfieris served on the board of directors of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church and its school and played an active role in the Eastern Suburbs Football Association. He supported several causes, including the Australian Archaeological Institute of Athens. He was a patron of Sculpture by the Sea and a supporter of the Beyond Borders Kastellorizo International Documentary Festival. He supported the Australian Hellenic Choir and was on the Honourary Council of the Hellenic Initiative Australia.

Throughout his life, Mr. Alfieris remained a humble leader. He was known for his generosity, selflessness, and integrity. His approach to leadership was one of service, always willing to lend a hand and encourage others to follow their passions.

Mr. Alfieris’ ability to unite people, promote his culture, and create lasting change within the Greek Australian community will be remembered for generations to come. His commitment to fostering unity and inspiring others to reach for their dreams has left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to have known him.
