We all need clear information to understand our rights, make decisions and access the services we rely on.

For people who speak a language other than English, translated information and interpreting services can help them access emergency services, understand health advice that affects them or their family, support their kids at school, or participate in important legal processes.

With more than 280 languages spoken across NSW, our government needs to communicate in ways that are understood by the communities it serves. Providing information and services in different languages is about bridging barriers, fairness and even justice. It helps more people find the support they need, understand the decisions that affect them and participate fully in life in NSW.

As we mark International Translation Day on 30 September, I want to recognise the interpreters and translators who make this possible every day.

So far this year, Multicultural NSW has delivered more than 20,000 translations and 37,000 interpreting assignments, and continued to build professional pathways for the next generation of interpreters and translators.

As the languages spoken across NSW change, our language services must keep pace. We need to continue building a skilled, professional workforce that can meet the needs of our communities.

To the interpreters, translators and language professionals working across NSW, thank you. Every day, you help people get the information they need, access essential services and make their voices heard.
