It was a proud moment this month at Multicultural NSW, as our Language+ App received the Premier’s Award for Excellence in Service Delivery. Co-designed with NSW Police and our community, Language+ helps Police Officers communicate more clearly with linguistically diverse communities.

Interacting with police and not being able to fully understand or be understood can be a stressful experience for many in our community. Language+ starts to remove that barrier, and it’s a game changer for improving communication between police and community. Congratulations to the whole team involved and thank you to our partners at NSW Police.

You can read about Language+ and other highlights from the 2024-2025 financial year in our newly published Annual Report.

This month, we announced the inaugural members of the NSW Settlement Advisory Council. This group of experts will advise the Minister for Multiculturalism and Multicultural NSW on refugee settlement policy. The Council will be chaired by Peter Shergold AC, who just marked 10 years of leadership as Coordinator General for Settlement. Thank you, Peter, for your tireless work supporting refugees to make NSW their home. You can read more about the Council and the inaugural members in this newsletter.

I was privileged to join with members of our Jewish community at NSW Parliament House to celebrate the upcoming Chanukah festival. Chanukah is, at its heart, a reminder of light prevailing over darkness, of hope, perseverance, and the enduring power of community. Those lessons feel especially meaningful today.
