Multicultural NSW wishes everyone a Happy Diwali!
Diwali, or Deepavali, is the most widely celebrated festival in India and many South Asian countries. It is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and others around the world, including those who call New South Wales home.
‘Diwali’ means ‘row of lamps’. It symbolises the victory of light over darkness. It is celebrated by lighting small oil lamps called ‘diyas’, symbolising the lifting of spiritual darkness and the renewal of life. It is a time to pray for health, knowledge and peace.
New South Wales is home to many vibrant Diwali celebrations.
