Communities and Justice (DCJ)

Putting Communities First

We deliver services that empower people, families and communities across NSW. We do this through housing, justice, child protection and community programs that promote safety, wellbeing and opportunity.

We partner with government, nongovernment and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and draw on lived experience, data and evidence to design supports that break cycles of disadvantage and improve outcomes

Our priorities for better outcomes in NSW

Our priorities reflect a clear commitment to helping people thrive by investing in early support, cultural connection, accessibility and strong systems. They guide how we work with communities to deliver meaningful and lasting change.

  • Aboriginal families are strong and connected – We uphold culture, enable truth-telling and strengthen shared decision-making.
  • Shared clients are supported to thrive – We deliver joined-up responses, holistic approaches and early intervention.
  • Customer-informed service improvement – We listen to the customer voice and improve accessibility.
  • Future-focused systems and assets – We invest in efficient, sustainable and connected systems.
  • A flourishing and empowered workforce – We create an inclusive, anti-racist workplace where everyone belongs.

How we partner with people and communities

Our ways of working shape every interaction we have – ensuring our work is people‑centred, culturally grounded and built on trust.

  • We are people-focused and family centred – with culture at the heart of our work.
  • We build trusted relationships through collaboration.
  • We listen and learn from lived experience.
  • We use trauma-informed practices and evidence-based decisions.
  • We promote knowledge-sharing and innovation.

Diversity is our strength

We’re committed to building a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve, because inclusive teams create better, more accessible services. We actively encourage applications from people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTQIA+ communities and people from culturally diverse backgrounds. Inclusion and belonging are central to our culture.
