‘Generation Change’ | Ruby Kraner-Tucci for The Jewish Independent
Best Report in Multicultural Media
Ruby Kraner-Tucci’s passion for elevating the voices and experiences of young Australian Jews led her to introduce a monthly column in The Jewish Independent called Generation Change.
The column was created with a clear intention to broaden the conversation within the Jewish community.
“The Jewish Independent was established to present a nuanced view of issues affecting Australia’s Jewish community,” Ms Kraner-Tucci, Assistant Editor and Journalist, said.
“Our commitment to showcasing diverse perspectives is evident in Generation Change, where we highlight topics often considered taboo in our community.”
Since launching the column in March 2024, Ms Kraner-Tucci has spoken to young leaders about a variety of subjects.
These include the burden of being a young carer, the limited media freedom within Australia’s criminal justice system, the overlooked opportunity for workplace disability inclusion, and the journey to accepting an LGBTQI+ and Orthodox Jewish identity.
These conversations are designed to encourage The Jewish Independent’s predominantly over-50s readership to think critically about contemporary Jewish life.
“Our interviewees reflect the diversity of Australia’s Jewish community. I want to challenge the common misconception that this is a homogenous cultural group.
“We offer a platform for diverse voices, a home for Jewish writers and contributors, and bring our audience thoughtful analysis, respectful debate, and new ideas about Jewish life”, she said.
Generation Change has also made a significant impact online. By promoting the column on social media through original video content, The Jewish Independent has seen an increase in its following and engaged a previously unreached younger audience.
Ultimately, Generation Change reflects The Jewish Independent’s broader mission.
“We aim to nurture informed and open-minded debate and present contested issues in a thoughtful way,” Ms Kraner-Tucci said.
‘Generation Change’ was awarded Multicultural NSW’s 2025 Best Report in Multicultural Media.
