This month our team at Multicultural NSW came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week and reflect on this year’s theme: Keep the Fire Burning: Blak, Loud and Proud! Our agency has made a commitment to walking a pathway with First Nations people as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Our RAP is one way we continue to work towards ensuring our work within community is respectful and inclusive of Aboriginal people across NSW.

In the spirit of working together, late last month, we held Multicultural NSW’s first Regional Annual Summit in Wollongong. We hosted over 200 stakeholders from across the state to share our Agency’s strategic priorities and discuss issues affecting communities.

Last week, Multicultural NSW also represented the NSW Government at the Ministerial Forum on Multicultural Affairs, hosted in South Australia. Ministers and senior government representatives from across the country discussed the Commonwealth Government’s review of national multicultural policy settings, refugee settlement, the continuing Israel-Gaza conflict and social cohesion challenges. Other topics discussed were settlement support for those fleeing emergency conflict zones and the Anti-Racism Framework being developed by the Australian Human Rights Commission under the leadership of Race Discrimination Commissioner, Giridharan Sivaraman.

To foster stronger communities, we’ve opened the Stronger Together Festival and Event Grants Program to support communities to deliver cultural events. Details on how to apply are in this issue of Multicultural Link.

Finally, do you know an outstanding contributor in the multicultural media and marketing industry? Recognise their excellent work and nominate them for the Premier’s Multicultural Communications Awards. Nominations close this Sunday, so don’t delay.

As always, we are stronger together.
