
The winner of 2024 Business Excellence – Local Government Medal is Liverpool City Council.
This award recognises the outstanding achievements of a Local Government organisation that has worked to develop and support a diverse local community.
The traditional custodians of the Liverpool area are the Cabrogal tribe of the Darug Nation.
Liverpool is a fast-growing area of south-west of Sydney and the face of multicultural Australia with 43.2 per cent of its residents born overseas.
The Liverpool Local Government Area (LGA) is one of the fastest growing regions in Sydney and comprises of 42 suburbs over 305 square kilometres, with a mix of city, suburban and rural areas, and new developments at Austral and Edmondson Park.
Close to 52% of Liverpool’s population speak a language other than English at home.
Experiencing substantial growth from urban release development and from redevelopment in established areas, Liverpool’s population is expected to almost double to more than 320,000 over the next 20 years.
In 2023, Liverpool City Council launched, ‘Experience the World’, a series of seven major cultural events that celebrate Liverpool’s diversity, support intercultural understanding, and provide new migrant communities the opportunity to celebrate and retain their identity.
Council’s flagship annual events encourage social cohesion by allowing attendees to develop an appreciation for other cultures, providing opportunities for local entertainers and entrepreneurs.
There has been considerable positive community feedback about the Experience the World events. The events have fostered positive perceptions of Liverpool, among its residents, and in the broader Sydney community. Entry to all events are free to the public and feature a variety of food and market stalls, entertainment, and cultural displays.
“We are thrilled to be named as the Business Excellence – Local Government Medal winner for 2024,” said Liverpool Mayor, Ned Mannoun.
“Our commitment to cultural diversity and community makes our city one of the best places to live in New South Wales,” he said.
The new Western Sydney International Airport due to open in 2026 will bring further employment opportunities to the Liverpool region.
In 2024, Council will continue its upgrade of Light Horse Park to incorporate aquatic surrounds into recreational facilities and host its popular cultural events.
