The late Den Chen

Mr. Den Chen was a devoted family man, whose life exemplified compassion, humility and resilience. Born in Svay Rieng Province, Cambodia, he survived the brutal Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979), enduring forced labour, hunger, and imprisonment. Despite these hardships, Mr. Chen emerged with a deep commitment to peace and supporting his community.

After fleeing Cambodia, Mr. Chen and his family settled in Australia, where he became an active volunteer with the Salvation and Cambodian Culture Association from 2000. He worked tirelessly to help refugees and migrants in similar situations. He also contributed to fundraising efforts to purchase land in Canley Vale for a Buddhist temple and hall, for which he served as Secretary.

Mr. Chen’s passion for supporting both his homeland and fellow Cambodians in Australia led to his key role in securing a space for the community to gather, study, and practice their culture and religion.

A deeply spiritual man, Mr. Chen built relationships with all Khmer temples in Sydney, transcending political differences. His ability to unite various groups within the Cambodian community was testament to his character. He was known for fostering collaboration and bringing people together for the common good.

Mr. Chen was a quiet yet effective leader who led by example. He instilled in his family the values of gratitude, respect, and contributing positively to society. He worked to build the capacity of younger generations, emphasising that leadership meant empowering others.

Mr. Chen’s legacy lives on in the Cambodian community. He is remembered as a compassionate, humble, and inspiring leader whose dedication and love for his people made an enduring impact.
