The late Ali Karnib
Ali Karnib’s legacy is one of service, integrity, and enduring commitment to his community. Across 25 years as a Councillor on Liverpool City Council, he worked with steadfast determination to ensure that fairness and opportunity were at the heart of his local community.
A former math and science teacher, Mr Karnib was deeply committed to education, civic leadership, and multicultural inclusion. Mr Karnib arrived in Australia from Lebanon in 1984, looking for better opportunities for his family.
First elected to Liverpool City Council in 1999, he served in the Council until 2024. During that time, Mr Karnib held the role of Deputy Mayor on three occasions and contributed tirelessly on many committees. He became the longest serving councillor in the history of Liverpool Council.
With almost half of Liverpool residents born overseas and more than 150 languages spoken, Liverpool Council is incredibly diverse, a quality Mr Karnib believed was the heart of his community.
As Councillor, he supported multicultural festivals, language services, and migrant resource centres, ensuring that families new to Liverpool could access the same opportunities as long-standing residents.
He worked with sporting groups and youth initiatives, recognising sport and education as common ground for young people from every background.
Over his years of service, Mr Karnib was a mentor to new and emerging elected officials across the chamber. His guidance and willingness to share knowledge extended beyond political lines, fostering collaboration that strengthened the work of Council. He was a voice for those who often went unheard.
As President of the Lebanese Community Council of NSW, a position he held from 2014 until his passing, Mr Karnib brought people together across cultures and faiths, fostering unity through dialogue and shared celebration.
Whether organising iftars (evening meals) during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, supporting multicultural festivals, or standing alongside families in times of need, Mr Karnib lived his values through action. He always welcomed people of all faiths and invited the broader community to share in the proud traditions of the Lebanese community.
Ali Karnib will be remembered for the lives he touched and the city he helped shape.
