Dr Sandra Hale
Sandra is passionate about issues relating to access and equity for those who don’t speak English, and is committed to improving and maintaining the quality of interpreting and translation services. She’s also interested in language maintenance and language learning.
Sandra is Professor of Interpreting and Translation at the University of NSW, where she runs the Interpreting and Translation post-graduate programs, teaches and conducts research specialising in legal interpreting. She is internationally recognised, with more than 100 academic publications.
Sandra has provided training to the judiciary on working with interpreters for over more than 20 years and is one of the major authors of the ‘Recommended National Standards for Working with Interpreters in Courts and Tribunals’ report by the Judicial Council on Cultural Diversity, launched in 2017. Sandra also led the full review of NAATI*, leading to the ‘Improvements to NAATI Testing’ (INT) report in 2012 and the current changes.
Sandra has more than 30 years’ experience as a NAATI-accredited Spanish <> English interpreter, translator and certified conference interpreter. She was the AUSIT** national president from 2014-2017.
