Rebecca Beeson

Rebecca Beeson plays as a Forward for the Giants ALFW team. Nominated for a Rising Star award in 2018 and now in her 3rd year at the club, this is her story.

I grew up on the central coast of NSW where I played everything from soccer to cricket to baseball. When I was 12 my family and I moved to Perth, which is when I first started playing AFL. Throughout my childhood years I was always very focused at school and prioritised my studies just as much as my sport, as my parents always wanted me to attend University.

My mother is Taiwanese and my father is from country NSW so I grew up with a mix of Australian and Asian cultures. Currently, I'm also a student at UNSW, studying a double degree in Commerce and Media. I’m in my 5th and final year.

I started playing AFL when I was 12 in Perth and have played ever since. When my family moved back to Sydney when I was 15 years old, I started playing Senior womens AFL for Macquarie University. When I started attending UNSW for further studies I made the switch to the UNSW/ES bulldogs.

At 19 I was drafted by the Giants in the inaugural womens AFL draft at pick 32. This is now my 3rd season at the Giants.

I think that individual difference is a special thing, and I love learning about other people's stories that differ from the experiences that I have. Multiculturalism means inclusivity to me. If every person is open and more inclusive to those that differ from themselves, then the world would be a better place for all of us to live in.
